Józef Bem

Died December 10, 1850 in Aleppo, Ottoman Syria
Bem was a Polish general and a national hero of Poland and Hungary. He fought in- and outside Poland's borders for the future of his country; anywhere his leadership and military skills were needed.

He joined the French campaign against Russian ib 1812. He also participated in the November Uprising in 1830. His forces bravely charged at the Russian opponents. After the collapseof this Uprising in 1931, he escaped to Paris.
In 1848 he took part in the Austrian Revolution. After the collapse of the Hungarian rebellion he fled to the Ottoman Empire, where he adopted Islam, and under the name of Murad or Yusuf Paşa/Pasha served as governor of Aleppo.
